Education
For a while the big fad in education was to talk about the three “Rs” – “reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic.” People said students would learn more effectively if teachers got back to the basics. That may be right – but it’s time for our schools to get back to the basics also. That means graduating students who can read, write, and enter a rapidly changing economy unlike anything we could have imagined 20 years ago.
North Carolina students today have incredible potential. They represent the future leaders of our state and nation. With this in mind, I am working hard as your Representative to make sure we give them the opportunity to succeed. We must take a proactive approach to giving the students of North Carolina the necessary tools to make a positive impact on our state in the future.
Teaching children the basics of education is important, but whats more valuable is creating a longterm vision and foundation for the children of our state so they can be economically competitive in the future. As your representative, it is my priority to provide all children with the academic knowledge that allows them to succeed in the real world when they truly are the leaders in society.
Our students need to understand how the material they are learning benefits themselves and others across North Carolina. To stimulate learning we need high quality teachers to mold and motivate the students for future success. Our teachers must push the students to new levels of academic excellence and excite them about future endeavors.
Along with making sure North Carolina provides the best classroom instructors, we must ensure a safe learning environment, seek family and community involvement, and use current technology in our school system – so our children get the education they deserve.
In order to succeed we must cut the drop out rate in our high schools and improve End of Course exam scores for all students. With a passionate focus in these areas, I am confident we can make the North Carolina school system the best in the nation.
